January 10 - Harold Macmillan becomes the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. January 13 - Wham-O Company produces the first Frisbee. January 14 - Humphrey Bogart dies of throat cancer at age 57. February 15 - Andrei Gromyko becomes foreign minister of Soviet Union. March 1 - Dr. Suess' The Cat in the Hat is published. April 4 - Amid much glitz and glamour, the Tropicana opens its doors on the Las Vegas Strip.
April 9 - Egypt reopens the Suez Canal for all shipping. May 3 - Walter O'Malley, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, agrees to move the team from Brooklyn, New York, to Los Angeles, California.
